Irwin J. Borof, took and passed the February, 2007 Colorado Bar exam and is presently practicing law in Colorado with offices at 333 S. Townsend Ave., Montrose. Mr. Borof is a 1964 graduate of the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) and had his first divorce case in 1966. Like most attorneys at that time, Mr. Borof had a general practice and in addition to divorces, handled criminal and personal injury jury trials, business matters and other assorted legal problems for individuals. However, beginning in the late 1980's, his practice was primarily family law and he has specialized in this area ever since.
Over his more than forty years of practice, Mr. Borof has handled thousands of family law cases, including divorces, custody and visitation matters, support, and property divisions. He represents both men and women, and custodial and non custodial parents.
In addition to appearing in court, Mr. Borof was a law professor at JFK University law school in Walnut Creek California, teaching Community Property. He was also active in the Family law Bar, culminating in his appointment in 2000 to the Family Law Executive Committee, the body that governs the Family Law Section of the California State Bar. In that capacity, Mr. Borof participated in drafting Family Law legislation and on several occasions, appeared before the California legislature to testify on such legislation.
From 1997 to 2004, Mr. Borof regularly taught classes to attorneys on Family law Subjects at the State Bar Convention and at State Bar sanctioned education institutes. The subjects included spousal and child support, custody, drug and alcohol issues in divorce cases, among others. The classes were approved for continuing legal education credits including credits for certified family law specialists.
He has written articles on these subjects in the statewide Family Law News, a publication for members of the Family Law section of the California Bar. In addition, he had a column in that publication, entitled "Nuts & Bolts", which provided law practice tips for other attorneys. Mr. Borof has also sat as a judge Pro Tem in the Family Law Departments of the Contra Costa Superior Court.
